Kolkata filmmaker traces Christ’s ‘India trail’

KOLKATA: Where was Jesus Christ between the age of 12 and 30 years? He supposedly visited India during this period, according to a theory, and a filmmaker here has tried to follow Christ’s yet unexplored trail in his new movie. Though the Bible does not give credence to such theories, engineer- turned filmmaker Subhrajit Mitra’s “The Unknown Stories of the Messiah” focuses on the unexplored life of Christ and his unaccounted years in the Bible. Did Christ visit India after his crucifixion? Is a tomb in the Kashmir Valley that of Christ? These are some of the controversial questions Mitra raises in his film. “Christ supposedly visited India, according to an alternative theory,” Mitra said. “Neither the Bible nor the mainstream gospels give credence to such theories but the scrolls found in caves near the Dead Sea or at Nag Hammadi (in Egypt), believed to be the first drafts of the Bible, corroborate the alternative theory about Christ,” Mitra told IANS. “According to Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic scriptures and beliefs, Christ visited India during the period of his missing years in the Bible and stayed in the country for 14 years. “His Christianity was influenced by Hinduism as we find that the New Testament of the Bible was more akin to Hinduism than Judaism. “In Bhavishya Maha Puran, a text dating back to the second century AD, there are references of Christ’s interaction with King Shalivahan, the grandson of Vikramaditya, in Kashmir. “Scholars say it happened after Christ’s resurrection, ” said Mitra. He also noted that there were different isolated pockets that corroborated the “alternative theory” about Christ. This alternative theory was strengthened after some scrolls (dating back to between 200 BC and 100 AD) were discovered in 1947 in a group of caves near Khirbat Qumran in Jordan at the northwestern end of the Dead Sea. Two years before that, in 1945, some scrolls dating back to 350 AD were found tucked into a large jar at Nag Hammadi village in upper Egypt. Mitra’s film, produced by Atanu Roy of Sweet Melody, seeks to unearth the truth through the discourses of an archaeologist (played by Soumitra Chatterjee) and a novelist (Aparna Sen). “We have shot in Ladakh, Kashmir, the Silk Route, Kerala, Varanasi and Puri for the film - following the trail of Christ,” said Mitra. “There are many documents in the vault of the Vatican and the church doesn’t publish them because they obviously want to project Christ as a god and not as a human. “Assimilation of all such stories raises the question why there was no proper research on the alternative theory about Christ,” said Mitra. German scholar H.J. Trebst, who has been researching on the subject of Christ’s missing 12 years, invited scholars to a seminar at Puri in Orissa in November 2003. According to some scholars of the Orient and the West, Christ had visited Puri where he had studied Veda and yoga before returning home to preach Christianity. Christ also studied Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent, according to Trebst, who has done extensive research in Ladakh and Nepal to trace the evidence of Christ’s itinerary in the subcontinent. According to Trebst, Puri was a famous seat of learning some 2,000 years ago and history has revealed that various religious leaders visited the city over the centuries. There is also a belief that Christ’s tomb is in the Kashmir Valley and foreigners, especially Israelis, visit it in large numbers. The main attractions in the valley for Israelis are two graves - believed by some to be those of Christ and Moses. A section of the local population believes that Kashmiris are one of the lost tribes of Israel. Aziz Kashmiri, author of the book “Christ in Kashmir”, insists that Kashmiris are descendants of one of the 10 lost tribes of Israel and that Christ died during a visit to the valley. According to Mitra, it is time serious research begins to verify the alternative theory about Christ and his Indian connections. About 2.3 percent of India’s population of 1.1 billion follows Christianity, with about 60 percent of them being Catholics. “Many theologians and scholars believe the Holy Spirit written as, Pneuma in Greek every time it appears in the New Testament, is a feminine being. Note that Pneuma is a neuter word in Greek, but in Hebrew the word Ruah (Spirit) and in Aramaic the word Shekinah (Presence) are feminine words and imply a feminine divine presence. The Holy Spirit is possibly a Christian Goddess, not a mysterious invisible member of an all-male Trinity “club.” Or more provocatively, maybe there is a Feminine Trinity of God-the-Mother (Sophia and Mary?), God-the-Daughter (Mary Magdalene) and Goddess-the- Spirit-Presence (Shekinah, Ruah). The Holy Spirit appears at Yeshua’s baptism in the form of a dove. The dove has long been a symbol of the Goddess in the Ancient Near East, and was never used to symbolize any male Being or God.

We must also look in the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, and consider the Goddess Sophia. Her name means “Wisdom.” She is the Goddess of Wisdom referred to repeatedly in scripture as the wife of God-the-Father. See Proverbs, Song of Songs, (also called Song of Solomon) in the Hebrew Bible, and see the Book of Sirach and the Book of Wisdom in the Apocrypha found in the center of any Catholic Bible.

Here is an excerpt from “The Decline of the Feminine and the Cult of Mary In Greco-Roman Christianity” , probably because of the dangers of Gnosticism, the biblical images of God as female were soon suppressed within the doctrine of God. God as Wisdom, Hokmah in Hebrew, or Sophia in Greek, a feminine form, was translated by Christianity into the Logos concept of Philo, which is masculine and was defined as the Son of God. The Shekinah, the theology of God’s mediating presence as female, was de-emphasized; and God’s Spirit Ruah, a feminine noun in Hebrew, took on a neuter form when translated into Greek as Pneuma.

The Vulgate translated Ruah into Latin as masculine, Spiritus. God’s Spirit, Ruah, which at the beginning of creation brings forth abundant life in the waters, makes the womb of Mary fruitful. In spite of the reality of the caring, consoling, healing aspects of divine activity, the dominant patriarchal tradition has prevailed, resulting in seeing the female as the passive recipient of God’s creation; and the female is expressed in nature, church, soul, and finally Mary as the prototype of redeemed humanity. Because God as father has become an over literalized metaphor, the symbol of God as mother is eclipsed. The problem lies not in the fact that male metaphors are used for God, but that they are used exclusively and literally. Because images of God as female have been suppressed in official formulations and teaching, they came to be embodied in the figure of Mary who functioned to reveal the unfailing love of God.”

Drunkards belong to the night and darkness. 70) 1 Timothy 3:2-3 - Bishops (elders) are to be temperate, sober, and not near any wine. 71) 1 Timothy 3:8 - Deacons are to be worthy of respect and not drinkers. 72) 1 Timothy 3:11 - Deacons’ wives are to be temperate and sober. 73) Titus 1:7-8 - An overseer is to be disciplined. 74) Titus 2:2-3 - The older men and older women of the church are to be temperate and not addicted to wine. 75) 1 Peter 4:3-4 - The past life of drunkenness and carousing has no place in the Christian’s life.

ADAM, EVE AND TREE OF LIFE April 7, 2008

The traditional interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve is that they disobeyed God by eating the forbidden apple, which is the origin of Original Sin.

We need to remember that there were two trees in the Garden:

“In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”…

And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;  but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

Again the big question is why Adam and Eve choose the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. I would choose the tree of life.

Adam and Eve ate the apple, and when God realized this, He said:

“The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

It is obvious that after eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Adam and Eve realize that they are naked. This is definitely one step forward in their evolution. Acquiring the knowledge of good and evil means evolving from animals to human beings. Becoming human was both a blessing and a curse. There was much to be gained from it–as the Serpent said, “your eyes shall be opened”.

How does the story of Adam and Eve ends? Are we still evolving? What is the next step?

Remember what GOD said: “He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

Can we try to taste THE TREE OF LIFE and live forever as promised by Christ?

 

YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN March 24, 2008

John 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” John 3:2-4 (in Context) John 3 (Whole Chapter) John 3:7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ John 3:6-8 (in Context) John 3 (Whole Chapter)

Do you think that born again is certificate like in the school or should be something more? We can say thousands times “I am born again” but still is nothing more than a lip service.

Christ clearly specified how this can happen.

“5Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

This happening should take place inside within us not outside. Where is the location of the Spirit and the Water within us?
