    Does anyone have an actual reference for this quote attributed to Albert Einstein? I can’t find it. It seems to be yet another variation of Einstein’s tribute to Pablos Casals. “He perceives very clearly that the world is in greater peril from those who tolerate or encourage evil than from those who actually commit it.” (Conversations with Casals, 1957.)

    I was looking for a reference that this is actually an Einstein quote, too. I wanted to put it on my office wall.

    20 Mai 2013: Seems like nobody wants to follow up on this quote from Einstein. I can’t find any article — at least in English or Swedish — as to even when Einstein made this comment.

    What is known is that Einstein visited the United States in 1936. While he was gone, the Gestapo went thru his home in Germany looking for a major cache of weaponry.

    They found nothing more dangerous than a bread knife. Not surprisingly, the world feigned its disgust w/ the Gestapo’s unreasonable, anti-semitic inspired, jackbooted assault on Einstein’s property. Yet only a month later the same “disgusted” world met in Berlin for the 1936 Olympics. Hardly anybody seemed concerned about the Einstein incident by then.

    Except Einstein. He was sailing back to Homburg when the attack occurred. When he landed, he went to the American consulate in Hamburg, obtained an entry permit to the US, and got back on the next boat out of Hamburg to the US.

    It would take Einstein’s new homeland another 5 years to assume its responsibility as a major economic player on the world stage. And the responsibility that goes with this: that it had to fight the forces of darkness while there was still barely enough time to do it.

    So — if Einstein said this quote in the late 30s — one’d be hard pressed to find a reason why Einstein wouldn’t have said it. It is just as hard to prove him wrong in 2013
